“From what I understand,” Alasdair Gold says one Tottenham player has blown Conte away.

Since joining the club in November 2021, Tottenham Hotspur technical coach Ryan Mason has blown Antonio Conte away.

Since joining Spurs, the Italian has taken Mason under his wing, and the Englishman has worked for the club for several years.

Mason played for Spurs until 2016 when he was sold to Hull City after spending years with the north London club and rising through the ranks.

However, after being forced to retire in 2018, Spurs gave Mason the opportunity to develop as a coach, which he has done after working his way up the ladder once more.

And, speaking on his YouTube channel, journalist Alasdair Gold revealed that Conte and his coaching staff have been blown away by what they’ve seen from the 31-year-old:

“Ryan Mason is well-liked by the players. Remember, at the age of 29, he was a caretaker manager.

“I’m always told that his training sessions are excellent, tactically intelligent, and challenging.

“So, from what I understand, the coaches, and these are experienced Italian coaches, have come in and been very impressed with Ryan Mason.

“Conte was similar the moment he walked in because obviously, he wasn’t technically allowed to attend the early training sessions because, I believe, his work permit hadn’t arrived yet. So Mason was leading the sessions, and Conte was thinking, okay, this kid’s got something. That’s why you saw him develop into such a dependable member of the team.”

Making a good impression
Mason began his coaching career with Tottenham Hotspur and was quickly promoted to head of academy coaching in 2020.

However, his biggest opportunity to date came when he was offered the role of the caretaker manager in 2021 following Jose Mourinho’s dismissal.

Mason oversaw seven games during that time, including the Carabao Cup final, which they narrowly lost to Manchester City at Wembley Stadium.

Spurs’ league form was not bad under Mason, with 12 points from a possible 18, though there were some frustrating results, such as the 3-1 loss to Leeds United.

Mason, on the other hand, took on the role of technical coach under Conte and was recently part of the team that guided the ship to a stunning 1-0 victory over Manchester City in the Italian’s absence.

And we believe Mason is approaching his development as a young manager in the world of coaching in a very sound manner.

Former players such as Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard have already shown that they may have jumped into senior managerial jobs too quickly and had their fingers burned.

Both are currently unemployed after being fired by Premier League clubs this season.

And, while Mason may not have carried over their level of experience from his playing days, the 31-year-old is learning his trade under some of the most experienced managers in the game.

With Conte’s blessing, it will be interesting to see where his coaching career takes him.
