A new development in the James Maddison saga – good news for Newcastle in their pursuit of the Leicester City star?

The Mail revealed last week that Manchester City was planning a summer bid for long-term Newcastle United target James Maddison.

After we decided not to make a fresh bid for the Leicester City star in January, this felt like a potential setback in our efforts to bring the England international to St James’ Park in the coming months.

The Telegraph, on the other hand, appears to have very different information on the 26-year-old, claiming that Pep Guardiola’s side has

played down reports that he could arrive at the Etihad.

Furthermore, the Northern Echo reports that Maddison has already been identified as a ‘key target’ ahead of the summer transfer window, implying that a new bid is imminent as he approaches the end of his contract at the King Power Stadium.

There is still a long way to go and a lot of football to be played between now and the end of the season, but it can only be good news for Newcastle United if Man City is not looking to compete for the playmaker.

When asked if he had any summer signings in mind, Howe recently told the press:

“We’d have an idea (of summer goals), but that changes,” Howe explained. “Things can change in the blink of an eye. If you plan properly, you can look a few months ahead, but you must also be reactive to what happens on a daily basis.”
