Why was Papy Mendy ‘confused’ after scoring a stunner for Leicester City?

Latest Leicester City news as the midfielder opens his account for the club six-and-a-half years after joining by scoring the equalizer in a win at King Power Stadium.

Nampalys Mendy of Leicester City joked that he was ‘confused’ after scoring his first goal for the club in a 4-1 win over Tottenham on Saturday.

With City trailing 1-0 after Rodrigo Bentancur’s opener, the ball fell to Mendy at the end of the box after a Spurs defender cleared Timothy Castagne’s flicked header off the line. The midfielder struck the ball on the half-volley, giving Tottenham keeper Fraser Forster no chance.

The equalizer came from an unexpected source: Mendy. In his six-and-a-half years at the club, the Senegal international had not scored. In fact, it was only his second goal of the season.

“I am extremely proud, but I was perplexed when I scored!” he told LCFC.

Mendy started in place of Youri Tielemans, who was ruled out due to a calf injury. Tielemans is known for his spectacular goals, and Mendy claims to have learned from watching his fellow midfielder in training.

“I watch Youri a lot of time, and every day in the training sessions, I tried to do it like him, and I had success,” he explained.

City took control of the game following Mendy’s equalizer. Brendan Rodgers’ side cruised to victory thanks to goals from James Maddison, Kelechi Iheanacho, and Harvey Barnes. The focus is now on a difficult stretch of games, but Mendy has outlined what will be important in the upcoming fixtures.

“We have to keep that mentality, that good mentality,” he added. We have a good mentality right now, and we need to keep it. We are confident, and I believe it will bode well for the upcoming games.”

The game also saw the debuts of three January signings: Victor Kristiansen, Tete Andersen, and Mats Hummels.

and Harry Souttar make their home debuts for the club, with all three having made significant contributions to the squad since their arrival last month.

Mendy stated that the trio has settled in well at the club, as evidenced by their impact on the field. “It’s as if they’ve been here for a long time,” he observed. “It’s good for the team; they fight, they have a great mentality, and I’m glad to have them.”
