Midfielder says he has told Leeds board he wants Elland Road return, to reach landmark

Mateusz Klich has told Sportowe Fakty that he is keen on a return to Leeds United to reach the landmark of 200 games in all competitions for the Yorkshire side – with the Polish ace currently sat on 195, after his move to the MLS.

Klich, 32, left Leeds in January after failing to start a single Premier League game during the first half of the season under Jesse Marsch. Perhaps harsh on the Leeds icon, who chose to leave for free and join Wayne Rooney’s DC.

He has since impressed in the States, scoring on his debut with a gorgeous goal in a 3-2 win over Toronto. He has created numerous chances for his new side as Rooney looks to bring success come to the end of the 2023 MLS term.

Asked if he would ever return to Leeds, Klich gave maybe a surprise response. He says he has told the Leeds board that he will be back to reach a huge 200 outings for the Whites. Currently, Klich is just five games away from that.

“I have 195 games at Leeds and I told our directors when my contract was terminated that I would still be back for those five games. We’ll see how it all turns out,” Klich said when asked about a possible return to Elland Road.

When Klich left, it felt like the end of an era and a return to Elland Road was not even thought of. But, given the way the MLS season is scheduled, it has seen players from the MLS loaned to European clubs during their off-season.

So, Klich could return to Leeds at some point in order to play five more times and reach the craved 200 mark. But, it will be down to whoever is in charge at Elland Road in the future. Javi Gracia could do with Klich right now.

Indeed, Tyler Adams has picked up an injury and with Adam Forshaw also out, it leaves Leeds with Marc Roca, Weston McKennie, and youngsters Archie Gray and Darko Gyabi as cover. Having Klich would have really helped.
