Fabrizio Romano confirmed Tottenham will have a new weapon on their left flank next season and an Antonio Conte signing who reportedly wants out may well get his wish, per reports.
It’s looking increasingly unlikely Antonio Conte will make it through the international break as Tottenham manager, never mind to the end of the season.
The feisty Italian laid waste to both his players and his chairman in the aftermath of the 3-3 draw with Southampton on Saturday. The latest on when the axe will fall and who the Spurs squad reportedly wants as his successor can be found here.
A Conte exit may well spark mass change among the current Tottenham ranks too. Indeed, reports out of Italy a fortnight ago claimed Ivan Perisic harbours a desire to return to Inter Milan.
The 34-year-old Croatian cannot be classified as a bad signing by Tottenham. Indeed, the left wing-back has done what’s required with a goal and nine assists provided from the position.
However, Italian journalist Marco Barzaghi claimed Perisic hasn’t taken to English football and his desire to leave will greatly increase if Conte is ousted. At present, that looks almost a certainty.
A change in formation by a new manager could also spell trouble for Perisic. He’s taken well to transforming from a winger into a wing-back in his 30s but becoming an orthodox left-back in a back four may be a step too far aged 34.
Tottenham has left-backs Ryan Sessegnon and Ben Davies on the books, while Sergio Reguilon is on loan at Atletico Madrid and wanted by Sevilla.
However, according to Fabrizio Romano, Spurs will have an even more explosive option in their midst next season.
Tottenham left side to ignite with Destiny Udogie
Spurs signed wing-back Destiny Udogie for an initial £15m in August of 2022, though loaned the 20-year-old back to Udinese for the current campaign.
Taking to Twitter, Romano provided an update on Udogie, claiming the Italy Under-21 international “will be [a] Spurs player next season, regardless of the coach situation.”
As such, another loan does not appear to be in Tottenham’s thinking, with Udogie primed to burst onto the scene in north London next season.
Udogie operates primarily as a left wing-back and has bagged eight goals and six assists in Serie A over the last 18 months. What makes those numbers all the more impressive is the fact Udogie is still only 20 years of age.
With Romano confirming he’ll be integrated into the Tottenham team next season and his exploits in Serie A catching the eye, the signs are all pointing towards Perisic following Conte out the exit door.
Perisic’s contract has another year left to run, meaning Spurs may well make a small profit on a player they signed for free.
