Newcastle United have James Maddison ‘fear’ as transfer stance set

The latest Leicester City news as Newcastle continues to be linked with an interest in Maddison, with City having a fight on their hands to keep the midfielder this summer

Newcastle United continues to be linked with an interest in Leicester City talisman James Maddison ahead of the summer transfer window.

The Magpies failed with two bids for the England international back in the summer. The city instantly rejected offers reportedly worth around £ 35 million and £45m with staged payments. It was reported at the time that City found the offers “verging on the offensive”. However, Maddison’s contract situation with the club means that they may have to consider a big offer this summer, should one come in.

He will have just a year remaining on his contract when the transfer window re-opens, although City is keen to tie him down to a new deal. Uncertainty over which league the club will be in next season could put any negotiations on pause.

It seems that Newcastle’s interest in Maddison has not gone away over the past few months. His performances for City in the Premier League have caught the eye, and have earned him a place back in Gareth Southgate’s England squad.

According to The Telegraph, the Magpies ‘have not given up’ on pursuing Maddison ahead of the summer transfer window, but they have a “fear” over the player’s stance on a move to St James’ Park. It is said that the club is worried that Maddison will instead want to join a club in a position to win silverware immediately and who is able to offer higher wages.

Man City has been credited with an interest in the City man. Pep Guardiola’s side would fit the categories mentioned more than Newcastle.
