Former Leeds United manager Simon Grayson was willing to return to Elland Road in an interim role before Sam Allardyce was chosen by the board, according to The Athletic.

The news outlet reported on Thursday morning (4 May) that Lee Bowyer was also a contender for the job on a short-term basis following the sacking of Javi Gracia.

Leeds’ board, however, has opted to bring in Allardyce, who’s experienced relegation from the Premier League just once in his long career, to manage the final four games of the season.

Popular – but no thanks

Grayson is a man who’s well-liked by Leeds fans but ultimately, there would have been no point in hiring the 53-year-old, who’d have no doubt been out of his depth and a bit of a pointless appointment if he was hired.

Allardyce, at least, is proven at keeping clubs in the Premier League.

It didn’t pan out for him at West Brom and he’s never had just four games to try and keep a team from going down.

But is there anyone out there who could be better than Big Sam at taking on this job? Arguably, there isn’t.

Grayson is well remembered by Leeds fans for his time at Elland Road between 2008 and 2012, leading us to promotion from League One at the lowest ebb in the club’s history.

The Ripon-born manager is actually now the manager of Bengaluru in India so we may never know whether he was willing to quit that full-time job for the sake of a few months at Elland Road.

Either way, it shows a huge commitment from a man who’ll always be appreciated in this part of the world.

In other Leeds United news, a £1billion development is now more likely at Elland Road after a “shock” turn of events.
