Rio Ferdinand has offered his “congrats” to Chris Gunter after the former Nottingham Forest man announced his retirement from the game.
The 33-year-old currently plays for AFC Wimbledon in League Two and will hang up his boots at the end of the current campaign.
Gunter played over 150 times for Forest between 2009 and 2012 having also had spells at Tottenham, Cardiff City, Reading, and Charlton Athletic. The Welshman announced his retirement from international football in March having earned 109 caps for his country.
And his career has drawn praise from Man United great Ferdinand who posted a tribute on social media alongside a picture of the two together. He tweeted: “Some career, congrats bro!!!” Followed by a clapping hands emoji.
Announcing the decision to retire, Gunter posted on Twitter: “After taking some time for consideration, I’m announcing my retirement from professional football at the end of this season.
“I feel incredibly fortunate and blessed to have enjoyed the highs and lows of the past 17/18 years. Over 720+ games have brought many challenges and opportunities and through all of it, I’ve always given my absolute all.
“From Cardiff City to Tottenham Hotspur, to Nottingham Forest, Reading, Charlton Athletic, and AFC Wimbledon, thank you to all the managers who believed in me & all the players I’ve been fortunate to share the dressing room with.
“None of it would have been possible without the support of my family from the moment I started playing football. They’ve followed and supported my journey every step of the way.
“However I feel ready and excited for the next chapter of my career. I’m hugely thankful to the FAW, and Robert Page especially. Having completed my coaching badges, I will begin my new role in the summer. It’s an exciting opportunity to work alongside Rob and the staff.
“A final thank you has to be to the fans of every club I’ve had the pleasure of playing for. It means the world! Take care, Gunts.”
