Tottenham has appointed a ‘first-class’ manager who Real Madrid sacked after 14 matches

Garth Crooks thinks managerless Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea could do with the services of Wolves’ ‘first-class’ coach, Julen Lopetegui.

The former Tottenham striker praised the 56-year-old for the job he has done at Molineux – they were starring at relegation when he first joined in November, but now they are on 40 points and resting easy during the final few weeks of the campaign.

But he thinks the Midlands outfit might not be able to keep hold of Julen Lopetegui and suggested that Tottenham and Chelsea would ‘benefit from his services’.

The London duo are on the lookout for new faces for their dugout ahead of the season coming to a close and the summer transfer window opening.

It seems as though both parties, rather than bringing in somebody now, are waiting until the final ball is kicked before bringing in their preferred candidate.

It seems unlikely, but could former Real Madrid boss Lopetegui, who was sacked after 14 games, be that guy? Crooks certainly thinks so, as he told BBC Sport.

“Julen Lopetegui has done a brilliant job since his arrival at Molineux,” said Crooks. “His players have only really let him down once and that was at Brighton.

“The problem for Wolves is, can they keep him? Lopetegui is a first-class manager and I can think of a number of clubs who would benefit from his services – Spurs and Chelsea are just two.”

WHO WILL BE TOTTENHAM AND CHELSEA’S NEXT MANAGER?

Going by the rumor mill, it seems as though those at Stamford Bridge are far closer to an appointment than their neighbors.

To rub salt into the Spur’s wounds, there are suggestions that it will be none other than Mauricio Pochettino as Chelsea’s next manager.

It would be a body blow to the Spurs supporters more than anything because of what he means to them.

But whilst Pochettino heads to West London, the likes of Xabi Alonso are being tipped to be in the Hotspur Way dugout.

CASCARINO SAYS NEW TOTTENHAM MANAGER COULD SELL £92,000-A-WEEK PLAYER

Tony Cascarino has said that the prospective new Tottenham Hotspur manager could sell Eric Dier in the summer transfer window.

The former Chelsea player has written in The Times that Tottenham interim manager Ryan Mason was right to drop Dier from the starting lineup for the Premier League match against Crystal Palace at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this past weekend.

And talkSPORT pundit Cascarino believes that it was the right decision.

The pundit does not rate Dier, and he believes that whoever becomes the new Tottenham manager in the summer of 2023 could sell the £92,000-a-week (SalarySport).

Tony Cascarino on Tottenham Hotspur defender Eric Dier

Cascarino wrote: “Eric Dier losing his starting spot was long overdue. He has played poorly since the World Cup and while the Tottenham Hotspur defender is versatile, he lacks a standout skill.

“New head coaches, even interim ones, need to make a statement when taking over a struggling team, so dropping Dier was a natural decision for Ryan Mason.

“Dier has been at Spurs since 2014 and I wonder whether this summer’s head coach appointment will determine his future in north London.”

Harsh

In our view, it is a bit harsh of Tony Cascarino in regard to his comments about Tottenham Hotspur defender Eric Dier.

Now, no one would say that Dier is one of the best center-backs in the Premier League.

But the Englishman is a good player who has done well for Spurs over the years.

Yes, Dier’s recent performances for Spurs have not been great, but you could say the same about Cristian Romero.

While we do think that if Tottenham is able to sign a better center-back than Dier in the summer transfer window, then they should do so, we also believe that the 29-year-old, who can also operate as a midfielder, is a good player.
