Aston Villa goalkeeper Jed Steer is unlikely to require surgery despite him facing a calf injury that ended his campaign, claims Dr. Rajpal Brar.

The injury expert asserts that surgery is seldom an option for muscle setbacks, and he would be surprised if that was the route to getting him back to full fitness.

However, whether or not Villa will cater to rehabilitation remains to be seen, as his contract runs out at the end of the season.

Speaking about his extended absence, Brar, a doctor in physical therapy and a sports scientist, told Villa News“The original timeline with his injury looked to be around two months so his return this season was always going to be touch and go.

“It’s hard to say whether he faced a setback or his recovery is just slower than anticipated – which isn’t abnormal with calf injuries, really tricky, so they shut him down for the season.

With muscular injuries, surgery is rarely an option so I’d be surprised to hear that unless there’s more going on.

In terms of whether Villa will cater to his fitness or not after his contract, hard to say without knowing more about how the club operates. Some are very player friendly and are set to treat players as their own even if there’s no future whereas others don’t.

He has not featured for Aston Villa in the Premier League since September 2021 and spent last season on loan at Luton Town.

The 30-year-old featured on three occasions in the Championship and made another two appearances in the FA Cup.

It was the FA Cup that led to his long-term spell on the sidelines as in n March 2022, he suffered a partial tear to his Achilles in the defeat against Chelsea.

In other Aston Villa news, a senior player may never feature for the club again after recent news emerges, making a summer exit very much on the cards.
