Both Romero and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg found themselves out of the matchday squad for the club’s final home game of the season, with Yves Bissouma and Davinson Sanchez coming into the starting lineup in place of the pair.

Neither the Argentine nor the Dane have been in good form recently, which perhaps raised suspicions regarding whether they had been dropped.

However, Mason confirmed that both players had picked up injuries in the 2-1 loss at Villa Park, which forced them to miss the encounter against the Bees.

The 31-year-old told  Spurs Play about Romero and Hojbjerg: “They got injured in the Villa game.

“I think everybody could see that Cuti [Romero] was struggling in the first 10 to 15 minutes. He’s got an injury and Pierre is the same.”

Spurs produced yet another lackluster display on Saturday as Thomas Frank’s men came back from a goal down to win 3-1.

The result means that the Lilywhites could potentially be overtaken by Brentford on the final matchday and are now at the risk of finishing as low as ninth in the Premier League table.

Even if Hojbjerg and Romero had played against Brentford, it would have likely made no difference to the result.

The squad is understandably extremely low on confidence at the moment and is seemingly going through the motions as they just want the season to end.
