Coventry City-mad landlord lights up pub in sky blue ahead of play-off final

The Kings Head will be packed with Sky Blues fans on Saturday

A Sky Blues-supporting landlord has nailed his team’s colors not just to the mast, but to the whole of his pub. Wayne Quinlan, manager of The Kings Head in Cubbington, is grabbing a lot of attention with his appreciation of Coventry City’s heroic run to the Championship play-off final at Wembley on Saturday.

With the help of nephew Alex French and local DJ Pete Smith, he’s changed the color of the Church Hill pub’s outdoor lights to sky blue as Mark Robins and his players prepare for the biggest game of their lives. And, just for good measure, the interior has been given a sky blue and white makeover too.

Sharon Quinlan, who helps her brother Wayne to run the boozer, told CoventryLive: “My brother has traveled with the team home and away for 50 years. He’s a massive Sky Blues fan.

“We are Coventry City through and through, since whenever. Wayne and Alex have turned the outside lights sky blue in support of the team. We’ve also got sky blue and white bunting outside and lanterns inside that look like footballs.

“It’s tasteful, but it’s Coventry City.” Needless to say, Wayne and most of his regulars have tickets for the big match. For those without a ticket, Sharon hopes The Kings Head will be the next best thing.

“Obviously there’s a lot off to Wembley, but we’re nearly fully booked with people wanting to watch it here on the TV,” she said. “My stomach is already churning!

“Everyone is happy now because their tickets have arrived. After the semi-final it was like ‘Oh my God’ because they were hoping to get tickets, but we can all breathe again now.”

“We’re all Cov City fans and have been all our lives,” Alex, 22, said. “This is another stepping stone towards where we want to be. I’ve never seen anything like this in my lifetime so I’m really excited.”

A post on the pub’s Facebook page said: “If you can’t get a ticket to see the amazing Sky Blues at Wembley, come and support them in the pub. It’s such an achievement for them to have got this far and hopefully, they WILL DO IT. PUSB’S”
