Sky Italy’s Gianluca Di Marzio reported on transfer deadline day (31 January) that Everton had tabled a £30.8million bid for the Portuguese forward, but the deal never materialized due to the Italian side being reluctant to sell.

However, their interest hasn’t waned and it’s believed a deal is now more “likely”. It’s understood Napoli is also monitoring the 25-year-old’s situation, with Udinese wanting around £ 30 million.

On the cards

Everton’s interest in Beto has been rumbling away for some time. They were unfortunate not to get a move over the line in January, but they could land the 25-year-old this time around. Had they got a move done during the January window, there’s a chance the Toffees’ route to survival would have been far smoother.

Sean Dyche desperately needs backing in the window. He’s worked wonders with the tools he’s been given. It’s important to remember the former Burnley boss kept the Toffees up without signing a single player in January. It’s now about consolidating and making smart decisions.

Farhad Moshiri will try his best to bring in a high-profile name, but it’s something that has to be avoided at all costs. Dyche will steady this hectic and fast-sinking ship. A sensible mid-table finish is required next season before the move to the new stadium occurs. Another flirt with the Championship could prove to be fatal.
