Wout Faes has been urged to leave Leicester City after being told it is “not possible” for him to play for the Belgium national team while in the Championship.

The Foxes center-back has been capped three times by his country and will be involved with the Red Devils again during the upcoming international break after being called up by manager Roberto Martinez.

But the 25-year-old was not able to help save City from Premier League relegation. Faes could not turn around City’s fortunes following his arrival at the King Power Stadium from French side Stade Reims last summer.

Dean Smith’s side will be playing in the second tier of English football next season after Sunday’s 2-1 win over West Ham was rendered irrelevant due to Everton’s victory over Bournemouth on the final day. Faes scored his first goal for the club in that match but was of little consolation to him due to the overall outcome.

And former Belgium manager Marc Wilmots believes Faes will have no choice but to move away from the Foxes if he wants to be called up for international duty in the near future.

“You have to make the right choices and not stay there,” he told RTBF in quotes translated by Sport Witness. “Being in the Championship is not possible for the national team. (The international break is) the best possible showcase, they will be very important to him.”
