Leicester City talented young star urged to snub Tottenham transfer and join ‘perfect fit’ Newcastle

James Maddison is expected to leave Leicester City this summer and Newcastle United could revive their interest in the England international having had two offers turned down last summer

Transfer Talk: Premier League clubs eye Leicester's James Maddison | LiveScore

Jason Maddison should swerve a move to Tottenham this summer and instead prioritize a transfer to Newcastle United. That is the view of Gabby Agbonlahor, who believes the lure of Champions League football should prove decisive for the Leicester City star.

Maddison has enjoyed another fine season despite the Foxes’ relegation to the Championship, registering 10 goals and nine assists in the Premier League. The 26-year-old also earned a place in England’s World Cup squad and looks certain to move this summer with just one year left on his contract at the King Power Stadium.

Newcastle failed with two offers last summer, and have been tipped to revive their interest in the playmaker in the upcoming window. Tottenham is also considered among the frontrunners to sign Maddison, but former Aston Villa striker Agbonlahor feels the attacking midfielder will favor a move to join Eddie Howe’s side.

He told talkSPORT: “If I’m James Maddison, I’m not going to Spurs. That ship sailed when they finished eighth, with no European football.

“James Maddison will look at Newcastle [as a] perfect fit for him. You can see him in that Newcastle side, playing Champions League football, a better project than what’s happening at Spurs, going in a better direction.

“If I’m James Maddison, I’m not choosing Spurs. Even though he would suit them, they’re crying out for a number 10. But the poor season they’ve had, if I’m James Maddison, I’m saying to my agent ‘What about Newcastle? Can you get that one through, please? I’m not sure about Spurs’.”
