Report: Tottenham are ‘not giving up on talks to sign central defender

Tottenham Hotspur is persisting with the pursuit of Clement Lenglet and hopes to sign the defender on a permanent basis for as little as possible.

The Frenchman spent the 2022/23 campaign on loan with Tottenham as the North London club looked to bolster their faltering defense.

Lenglet managed to be a solid – if a little unremarkable – presence for Spurs across 35 appearances in all competitions, and even popped up with a goal and two assists during the season (Transfermarkt).

The 27-year-old has now returned to Barcelona for the close season but does not appear to have much of a future with the Catalan giants.

Barcelona are keen to get Lenglet off their books, and Diario Sports claim Tottenham Hotspur could take advantage of the financial situation at the Spanish club and acquire the center-back for as little as £5 million.

The latest from Sport.es suggested both Barcelona and Tottenham are hopeful of getting the transfer wrapped up by the end of June.

Barcelona and Spurs want the Lenglet deal done

As that deadline edges closer and closer, Mundo Deportivo has added its own update on the Clement Lenglet situation and stated both Spurs and Barcelona are looking to strike a deal in a timely fashion for the benefit of both parties.

Apparently, Barcelona is “working against the clock” to offload Lenglet. The player has to leave the club this summer as part of a visibility plan Barca submitted to La Liga last year.

Meanwhile, Tottenham are “not giving up” on securing a cut-price deal for the French defender.

The fact that the player has returned to Spain after his loan spell ended is thought to be “merely testimonial” and it is expected a move will be completed with a “minimum transfer fee” involved.

I would imagine this deal will be completed within the next week. Barcelona needs to sell quickly, and we can secure ourselves a nice little bargain in the process, so everyone wins in this scenario.
