Txiki Begiristain has delivered a public message thanking former first-team assistant coach Enzo Maresca after the Italian was named as the new Leicester City manager.

The 43-year-old became the new Leicester City head coach last week, replacing Dean Smith at the King Power Stadium, who was appointed on an interim basis following the sacking of Brendan Rodgers.

Maresca, who has enjoyed a successful playing and coaching career, was part of Pep Guardiola’s staff that won the treble this season, becoming the first team since Manchester United in 1999 to win the Premier League, FA Cup, and Champions League.

The Italian also managed the Manchester City EDS during his time at City, guiding the Blues to a Premier League 2 title in 2020.

Maresca played for Juventus, Sevilla, Fiorentina, and Olympiacos during an illustrious playing career, and prior to joining Guardiola’s coaching staff, the 43-year-old worked with former City manager Manuel Pellegrini at West Ham United.

The new Leicester manager was also subject to interest from Southampton and Celtic, as the Italian reportedly ‘impressed’ during talks and delivered an ‘outstanding’ interview.

Maresca will be tasked with bringing the Foxes back to the top flight after Leicester were relegated from the Premier League on the final day of the season.

Following his appointment at the King Power Stadium, Txiki Begiristain, Director of Football at Manchester City, thanked the 43-year-old for his service at the club.

“Enzo has played an important role in what has been a remarkable season for Manchester City.

“Having already previously enjoyed success with our Elite Development Squad, he brought those same qualities to our first team set-up and his efforts have been appreciated by Pep, his backroom team, and the Club as a whole.

Maresca isn’t the first member of Guardiola’s coaching staff to leave for a head coaching role.

Mikel Arteta departed the Etihad Stadium to become Arsenal head coach in 2019, while Domènec Torrent, who worked alongside Guardiola at Barcelona, Bayern Munich and City, became New York City FC manager in 2018.
