Wrexham captain makes Saudi dig amid Ryan Reynolds project claim

While a clutch of Premier League stars make the move to Saudi Arabia, Ryan Reynolds need not worry about his own Wrexham captain.

Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney’s Wrexham project is more exciting than a multi-million-pound move to Saudi Arabia. That’s the view of the Red Dragons’ captain Ben Tozer who evidently doesn’t fancy a bumper pay-day switch to the Middle East any time soon. The status quo of the Premier League ruling the roost on European transfers has been shaken up this summer, with a number of high-profile players accepting big-money offers to follow Cristiano Ronaldo to the Saudi Pro League.

Celtic midfielder Jota is the latest name of note to join Al Ittihad, where he will play alongside former Real Madrid star Karim Benzema and ex-Chelsea favorite N’Golo Kante. Ronaldo will be joined by Marcelo Brozovic at Al Nassr, while two more Chelsea stars – Kalidou Koulibaly and Edouard Mendy – are on their way to Al-Ahli.

On Monday, former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard was announced as the new manager of Al-Ettifaq, in another coup for the developing league.

Despite the flurry of moves to the Arab state, with more expected to come, Wrexham skipper Tozer is more than content with his lot in North Wales and even went as far as to claim that he was involved in a more exciting project following Wrexham’s promotion to League Two.

While the club’s Hollywood owners can not afford to offer the type of wages that are on offer in Saudi Arabia, Tozer, who is known in the game for his incredible long throw-in ability, believes the Welsh club’s quest to climb the football pyramid was a more enticing prospect.

Speaking to talkSPORT, Tozer said: “The money is the money, of course. In Saudi Arabia, that is something that sets them and their families up for life and you can’t really begrudge them.

“But playing for this club is so exciting at the moment. It’s really on the up. The stadium sells out every week, we won a trophy last year, and we are hoping to emulate that again this season.

“All the noise around the club, whether you like it or you don’t, it’s exciting and positive. So it’s a great place to be and I’m thankful I’m here.”

Wrexham’s squad is still on a high after finishing the season as National League champions with a record 111 points. It means that the club has returned to the Football League for the first time in 15 years and now attention will quickly turn to attempting to climb another level to League One.

But before the new season gets underway, Wrexham’s players can look forward to a high-profile preseason tour of America, where they will play in bumper fixtures against Manchester United and Chelsea.

The club’s profile has sky-rocketed stateside after the success of the Disney Plus fly-on-the-wall series ‘Welcome to Wrexham’. Such is the clamor to catch a glimpse of Wrexham’s heroes that tickets are even being sold for an open training session before their match against Chelsea.
