Coventry City have signed highly-rated defender Luis Binks loan from Italian top flight side Bologna.

The 21-year-old Gillingham-born player has joined the Sky Blues on a season-long loan, subject to EFL/FA and international clearance. A left-sided centre-half, Binks spent last season out on loan at Serie B side Como, having already played 15 games for his parent club in Serie A on signing from MLS side Montreal Impact.

The former England youth international, who has been capped at Under-16, Under-17, Under-18 and Under-19 levels, as well as Scotland Under-18s, started out at Tottenham Hotspur before taking an unusual route back to English football. After leaving Spurs’ academy at 18, Binks moved to Canada to play Major League Soccer.

He then switched to Bologna in 2020 and was loaned straight back to Montreal for a period before moving to Italy.

Manager Mark Robins said: “We’re very pleased to welcome Luis on loan until the end of the season.

“He is an accomplished defender, is versatile and also good on the ball. Luis has a good background and experience too, having played in a number of countries, and we look forward to working with him this season.”
