Teenage striker insists he wants to stay at his current club despite Spurs links

Bayern Munich striker Mathys Tel has seemingly put an end to speculation that he could join Tottenham Hotspur this summer, by revealing in an interview that he intends to ‘get better at FC Bayern’ and only thinks about playing for the German club.

At just 18 years old, Mathys Tel is one of the most highly-rated young strikers in world football. The Frenchman signed for Bayern from Stade Rennais last summer for a fee believed to be around £25m (Daily Mail).

Tel managed 28 appearances for the German champions last season, scoring six goals across all competitions (Transfermarkt).

This summer, Bayern Munich are on the hunt for a new striker, and Tottenham’s Harry Kane is well-known to be their top target.

The Bundesliga side have already had bids rejected for Kane, and there is thought to be a €20m (£17.1m) gap in the valuations between Bayern and Tottenham, though the former remain confident they can secure a deal for the England captain (BILD).

As part of the ongoing speculation surrounding Kane’s future, it had been suggested that Spurs were keen on bringing Tel to North London should Kane depart.

However, it was suggested by German journalist Kerry Hau that Tel wanted to remain in Germany.

Mathys Tel only thinks about Bayern Munich

Now, the player himself has put the rumours to bed in an interview with Sky Sports Germany, in which he makes clear how much he wants to stay with Bayern Munich.

Florian Plettenberg shared a snippet of the interview, where Tel said: “Of course, I want to get better at FC Bayern. I always want to learn and speak and work. In my mind, there’s only FC Bayern.

 

“Today I’m in Munich, playing for FC Bayern. Always FC Bayern, Mia San Mia.”

It had already been suggested quite clearly that Mathys Tel was not interested in leaving Bayern Munich regardless of the Kane situation, so we should not be surprised that he has come out and said this.

He is a terrific young player, but he is not the player Spurs need to replace Kane anyway, so we should move on from this idea quickly.
