A promising young player has left Leeds United to join Everton.

Real reason why Willy Gnonto wants to quit Leeds United for Everton emerges

Willy Gnonto wants to leave Leeds United to improve his chances with the Italian national team, according to Dave Maddock.

On page 45 of the Daily Star’s print edition on 11 August, the journalist said the 19-year-old is eyeing a move away from Elland Road as he wants to add to the 11 caps he’s already earned for Italy.

The forward has been heavily linked with a move to Premier League side Everton, with Sky Sports reporting on 10 August that he asked not to be selected for the Whites’ game against Shrewsbury Town in the Carabao Cup on 9 August.

Understandable

The way the Gnonto situation is being played out so publically is not doing anyone any good as it’s damaging to both the club and the player.

Although Leeds haven’t done anything wrong in this instance, it’s still not great to be caught up in the saga as Daniel Farke looks to steady the ship and improve his squad.

If the reports of the Italian refusing to play are true, then that is highly unprofessional and quite strange after he started in the opening game of the season against Cardiff City on 6 August.

But after seeing a number of his teammates from last season leave – most of which exercised clauses in their contracts – it’s no surprise that the teenager wants to follow suit.

There is a European Championships coming up in 2024 and, after having a taste of international football, Gnonto will be desperate to be included in the squad.

But that could be unlikely if he is playing at Championship level so it’s understandable if that’s the driving force behind him wanting to leave Elland Road even if he hasn’t gone about it in the best way.
