Matija Sarkic: Millwall sign goalkeeper from Wolves

Millwall have signed goalkeeper Matija Sarkic from Wolverhampton Wanderers for an undisclosed fee.

During his three-year spell at Molineux Sarkic spent time on loan with Shrewsbury, Birmingham and Stoke City.

He could make his Millwall debut in their Championship opener at Middlesbrough on Saturday (15:00 BST).

George Long had supplanted Bartosz Bialkowski as manager Gary Rowett’s number one last season, with the former Sheffield United and Hull City man making 36 league appearances.

Matija is a player who is well known to our goalkeeping coach Andy Marshall from the successful time they had working together at Birmingham,” director of football operations and recruitment Alex Aldridge told the club website.

“Now we are excited to see the best of him in a Millwall shirt.”

Wolves begin their Premier League season at Manchester United tonight (8pm kick-off) when Gary O’Neil will be in charge of his new team for the first time.

O’Neil, who has replaced Julen Lopetegui as Wolves boss last week, has had little time to prepare the side, having only taken his first training session last Thursday. However, there has been no new injuries in the camp with the exception of Matheus Cunha. However, he should be fit for this evening’s game.

Asked if there were any fresh injuries ahead of the United fixture, O’Neil said: “No. Everyone seems okay. Cunha has missed a couple of days on the grass but we are hopeful he will be back out tomorrow with the group. So, at the moment, we are pretty much as we were before I came in.”

Joao Gomes: Had a minor knock during the trip to Portugal and was subsequently an unused substitute in the 1-1 draw against Celtic in the friendly in Dublin. He returned to the starting line up for the home friendly against Luton but couldn’t steer the game the home side’s way in an entertaining contest.

However, he was excellent against Stade Rennais when he came off the bench at half time to replace Joe Hodge. He started and finished the move for Wolves’ second goal in that 3-1 win and has surely played his way into the starting line up for the Manchester United game.

Mario Lemina: Left out of the squad against Luton because of illness but was back in the starting line up against Stade Rennais. He impressed with his all-round performance before being substituted on 73 minutes and is another who is surely pencilled in for the starting XI at Manchester United.

Sasa Kalajdzic: Having been out for nearly a year after suffering an ACL injury on his Wolves debut, the striker has done more than could reasonably have been expected of him over the last week. He started the Luton friendly, showed some nice touches and linked well with Fabio Silva up front.

Even better was to come against Stade Rennais when he came off the bench for Matheus Cunha on 61 minutes and showed no sign of rustiness in a bright performance that included playing a part in the third goal. Okay, we still shouldn’t expect too much, too soon from the Austrian but he has shown he can be an option for O’Neil, along with Silva and Cunha.
