Daniel Podence is believed to have signed a new contract with Wolves before leaving to join former club Olympiacos on loan.

The winger was free to leave over the summer with just a year left on his contract after Julen Lopetegui and his successor Gary O’Neil both dropped him from first-team training.

It was widely reported that clubs in Saudi Arabia and Qatar wanted to sign the striker, but instead he returned to the familiar pitch in Greece.

It is reported that there will be no buy-in option, as Wolves have extended the 27-year-old’s contract until 2025 to help protect his value.

Podence moved to Molineux in January 2020 for £17m from Olympiacos but is currently on his way back to Athens. Speaking about Podence’s situation on Sunday, O’Neil said:
“I never closed the door to anyone, the situation is changing. 95% chance closed but still things can happen, I won’t rule anyone out, we’re still part of what we do and we’ll see how it goes in a few weeks next.

Meanwhile, in other Wolves news, the club have appointed Ian Burchnall to O’Neil’s coaching staff as first team coach.

The 40-year-old is from Belgian club Anderlecht, where he has been assistant coach since March.

Wolves will return to action on September 16 when they host Liverpool in the Premier League at Molineux.
