Opinion:– Gary O’Neil could unleash Adama Traore 2.0 in Wolves’ exciting 17 year-old star

The bright academy star is the next Adama for Old Gold.

Wolves have a slew of talent coming through the ranks, with one name breaking out in an area where the squad lost a key player over the summer.

Wolverhampton Wanderers have had a difficult time recently, juggling financial, managerial, and on-field issues while remaining in the Premier League.

The Old Gold have put in some impressive performances thus far under Gary O’Neil, who joined the side just four days before their season opener against Manchester United, but the results have not been consistent.

Wolves have only picked up three points from their first five games, with a late 1-0 triumph against Everton the high point of a run that has seen the team miss out on points despite posing a threat.

Much-needed sales were sanctioned in the summer to balance the books in order to comply with Financial Fair Play (FFP) requirements, leaving the club with a very minimal margin to replace such players.

As a result, O’Neil’s squad options have been reduced, allowing individuals outside the first team to demonstrate their worth while the club is in transition.

Winger Fabian Reynolds, who joined Wolves’ academy from AFC Kingston Youth in 2021, is one player who could break into the main team in the future.

Who exactly is Fabian Reynolds?

Deployed predominantly on the right wing, the 17-year-old has made excellent progress in the Midlands, rising up the ranks and earning minutes for the U21s as well as the U18s.

In 21 appearances for the Old Gold in the U18 Premier League last season, the forward had a role in four goals, scoring two and assisting two.

His old team dubbed the forward “formidable” at the time of his signing for the Premier League club, claiming on their official website that he was “destined for greatness” based on his performances prior to leaving.

At U13s, the 2006-born prodigy scored 39 goals in the SYL Premier Division, demonstrating form that hinted at how big of a star he could become in the game one day.

How does Fabian Reynolds play?

The winger is off to a solid start in his 2023/24 season, scoring a fantastic solo goal against Derby in the U18s dramatic 3-2 triumph.

If the tricky youngster can continue his rise through the ranks and have another great season for Wolves, there may be a vacancy in the squad for the youngster to thrive in senior circumstances, with him displaying skills similar to a recently departed favourite.

Adama Traore left Molineux last summer after a five-year affiliation with the club, leaving a need in the wide threat department.

According to FBref, the Spaniard rated in the top 5% of Premier League wingers for his one-on-one threat last season, averaging 2.95 successful take-ons per 90 minutes to underline his authority going forward.

Reynolds has strengths in his game similar to those of Traore, as evidenced by his goal against Derby last week, giving O’Neil the possibility to have the heir to the dangerous winger inside the club’s ranks now.

Wolves’ financial predicament may force the club to promote more youth possibilities rather than being active in the transfer window, offering this season an opportunity for O’Neil to find some hidden stars at the academy.
