Carlton Palmer reacts to the recent Gnonto/Leeds United news

Despite approaches from Everton and others, Wilfried Gnonto did not leave Leeds United this summer.

HIGHLIGHTS

  •  Wilfried Gnonto’s future at Leeds United is uncertain, with the club offering him a new contract despite his previous desire to leave.
  •  Everton has shown interest in Gnonto, but Leeds has resisted their attempts to sign him, demonstrating the club’s determination to keep their star assets.
  •  Carlton Palmer disagrees with Leeds’ decision to offer Gnonto a new contract, as he believes it rewards bad behaviour and sends the wrong message.

Wilfried Gnonto has a big decision to make about his future at Leeds United now that he’s back in the first team.

Throughout the summer, the winger has caused a stir at Elland Road, with his refusal to play to force a move in the Whites’ Carabao Cup first round tie against Shrewsbury and subsequent draw against West Brom not sitting well with supporters – especially given that he is still at the club.

But he’s now back on the field, and sources say a new contract has been offered to keep him – however Carlton Palmer isn’t happy about the situation.

What is the latest on Wilfried Gnonto’s contract issue at Leeds United?

Many were surprised to learn that Gnonto had stayed at Leeds United past the deadline, especially after Everton publicly expressed interest in the young Italian winger – though their attempts to sign the former Inter Milan youth product were thwarted as Leeds stood firm in their valuation of the prodigy.

Gnonto had to fight his way through training and missed games to have his way, but in the end, Everton signed Udinese striker Beto, relegating Gnonto to at least another six months at Elland Road.

According to Football Insider, while Everton did not sign the attacker, they are still interested in him – but Gnonto is focused on helping Leeds earn an immediate return to the Championship, with the club open to extending his contract.

Despite running until 2027, it would send a message to the big boys that Leeds would not be pushed into keeping its great assets, which would be a massive statement ahead of the rest of what is expected to be a turbulent season.

What has Carlton Palmer said about the newest Wilfried Gnonto news?

Carlton Palmer, speaking exclusively to Football League World, couldn’t wrap his head around the decision to grant Gnonto a new deal given how badly he wanted to leave the club last season.

“Apparently Leeds United are willing to offer Wilfried Gnonto a new contract to deter interest,” he stated. He’s already under contract until the summer of 2027, so I’m not sure what this is about.

“I understand he is a young player, but this is a player who refused to play in order to force a move.” This is plainly merely a message to a player who has caused problems and refused to train that he is willing to sign a new deal.

“I don’t believe in rewarding bad behavior.” Yes, you’ve brought him back in, and he’s a good player, but the club is already safeguarded by the duration of his contract.

“However, he’s a big factor in getting them promoted, so it might make sense to keep him happy in that case.” If they are promoted, it will be beneficial for business.”

Is this a wise decision for Leeds United?

It makes financial sense, which is a far cry from the forward-thinking Leeds we’ve seen over the last two seasons under Victor Orta.

Gnonto, on the other hand, will always be haunted by his reluctance to play at the start of this season, and it is up to him if he decides to put the past behind him.

Of course, it’s also possible that Everton and Leeds will switch places in the league at the end of the season, so if Gnonto isn’t going to sign a new contract, he should consider a move to Everton.
