Wolves can now acquire a failed summer target for just €10 million – A new release clause has been implemented to facilitate the transfer.
Wolverhampton Wanderers may be given the opportunity to sign summer target Nico Elvedi for €10 million if Borussia Monchengladbach agrees to a new contract.
According to BILD, the defender’s new deal, released today, provides a reasonable release provision for interested parties.
Throughout the summer transfer season, Elvedi was extensively linked with a move away from Monchengladbach, with Wolves being the most serious of his suitors.
The defender and his fiancée apparently agreed to the transfer to Molineux, but it didn’t happen because Wolves’ financial problems prevented them from matching Borussia’s demands.
This put Elvedi in an awkward situation because his contract with the German club expires next summer and they don’t want to lose him on a free transfer.
They had made it obvious that he would not be playing until he signed a new contract, which would be a tragedy for the player, who wants to be healthy and firing ahead of the European Championships next summer.
The suggestion was that he sign a new contract with an agreeable release provision included, which BILD says has already been agreed upon.
According to their sources, the defender’s new contract has a €10 million release clause for next summer.
That sum fits both parties because it means Elvedi is more than cheap, and it ensures Borussia receives a compensation for the player rather than losing him for free next year.
It remains to be seen whether this means he will now wind up at Wolves, but the defender now has a defined fee, and a pretty reasonable one at that.
