According to Ruhr24, Leeds United turned down a £22 million bid from German heavyweights Borussia Dortmund for French forward Georginio Rutter during the summer transfer window.
Rutter joined Elland Road from TSG Hoffenheim in January for a club record cost of £36 million. Rutter’s first half-season with the Lilywhites, however, did not go as anticipated, as he failed to score a single goal.
The Frenchman has been considerably more potent this season under new head coach Daniel Farke, scoring twice for Leeds in the Championship, once against Ipswich Town and again against Millwall in the team’s most recent excursion.
Nonetheless, Rutter had the possibility to depart through the exit door during the summer window. According to Ruhr24, European heavyweights Borussia Dortmund made a proposal of £22 million for the 21-year-old, but the deal was quickly rejected.
Dortmund’s bid was just under £14 million less than Leeds spent for Rutter in January, and the club’s board refused to accept it.
The Schwarzgelben were not the only top-flight club to make an offer for Rutter. According to Telefoot, Lyon are interested in signing the former Rennes player if winger Bradley Barcola leaves PSG. Barcola did move to Parc des Princes, but Leeds refused to trade Rutter.
Many prominent players left the Yorkshire club during the summer, including Weston McKennie, Tyler Adams, Jack Harrison, and Luis Sinisterra, but Rutter stayed and is having a good season so far.
Author’s Opinion
Given that Rutter spent two seasons in the Bundesliga, it’s understandable that Borussia Dortmund was interested in bringing him to the Signal Iduna Park.
However, the bid was unworthy of acceptance. Rutter is still only 21 years old, and if he can regain his form, he might be worth much more in the future.
