Against Fulham, Crystal Palace did nothing. That’s not an exaggeration. On his 100th appearance for the club, even the electrifying Eberechi Eze faded into obscurity when a stoppable force collided with a moving item at Selhurst Park.

Crystal Palace, on the other hand, did not lose.

Many teams value the ability to produce outcomes even on off days.

Selhurst Park has quietly become one of the most difficult places to visit in the Premier League. Palace has played 13 league games at home in the last 260 days, going undefeated in 11. Arsenal and Manchester City were the only clubs to leave with three points.

To keep that record intact at the weekend, England international Sam Johnstone had to be at his best in the Palace goal.

But, with to the £20 million signing of Dean Henderson from Manchester United, Roy Hodgson now has two excellent keepers to select from.

When asked if Johnstone’s performance was a reaction to the strain of new competition, Hodgson said flatly, ‘No. Sam is currently at this level. We didn’t sign Dean because we were dissatisfied with Sam’s performances. The competition will motivate them, but I’m not ready to say he’s suddenly had a terrific game as a result of it.
