According to an injury expert who spoke to West Bromwich Albion News, Martin Kelly’s return to the Hawthorns is still some weeks away.

The former Liverpool defender’s contract with Crystal Palace terminated at the end of the 2021/22 season, and he was signed by the Baggies, who were preparing for another season in the Championship.

Kelly’s game time with the West Midlands club, on the other hand, was severely limited, as he only made seven appearances in all competitions last season, including five in England’s second tier. The experienced fullback was loaned out to Wigan Athletic in January.

Unfortunately, Kelly had a’serious knee injury’ shortly after joining the Latics, according to the BBC, and missed the rest of the season. Despite returning to West Brom from his loan spell at the DW Stadium, the 34-year-old has been ruled out with a knee injury.

Kelly was set to return last month, according to Birmingham Live. Dr Rajpal Brar, a specialist in Physical Therapy and Sports Science, told West Brom News that Kelly could be ‘weeks’ away from returning to the game. [West Brom News quotes]:

“It appears that the player was involved in the decision to be extremely methodical and conservative with his return timeline.”

“Considering the timeline and player hesitation, sounds like a significant knee injury but difficult to say the severity but it could certainly be extreme,” he said.

“He does appear weeks away from making his first-team return.”

Kelly’s contract expires at the end of the current season, thus time is running out for him to impress West Bromwich Albion boss Tony Pulis and persuade Carlos Corberan to continue at the club.

Kelly could possibly decide to leave the company. At 34, the veteran has been out injured for eight months, which is typically the end of a footballer’s career.
