According to recent reports, Newcastle United made an enquiry for the Argentine during the summer and are keeping an eye on his situation ahead of the January transfer window.

In an interview with Football League World, BBC analyst Carlton Palmer addressed the speculations around Alcaraz and Newcastle, indicating he could move Southampton in the new year.

“If Southampton are not promoted and he is not getting game time, Alcaraz could leave in the January transfer window, if not in the summer.”

Alcaraz, a center midfielder who can also play out wide if necessary, appears to be a player with a lot of potential in the Championship. According to FBref, Alcaraz has rated in the top 1% of midfielders in terms of shot-creating actions, xG, total shot, and successful take-ons during the last 12 months.

As a result, it’s not surprising that a team like Newcastle appear to see lots of potential in the 20-year-old, so a move to St James’ Park from St Mary’s might be one to watch in the coming months, and it’ll be intriguing to see if he quickly returns to Martin’s starting XI.
