“Take a wage cut…” – West Brom fan pundit discusses Albion player’s future
Matt, a West Brom fan, weighed in on Alex Mowatt’s future.
West Brom’s Alex Mowatt gets his chance.
The 28-year-old was a high-profile signing a few years ago, but he hasn’t made the impact he would’ve liked at The Hawthorns, despite playing in his first year.

Mowatt moved to Middlesbrough for the previous season, but he failed to establish himself as a regular in Michael Carrick’s XI.

As a result, he returned to Albion in the summer, and the Baggies’ lack of resources in the window ensured he would always be given a chance.

And, for Carlos Corberan’s side, Mowatt has begun to impress, as he was a standout performer in what was otherwise a dreary display against Millwall.

What lies next for Alex Mowatt?
Moving ahead, it is unclear what Mowatt’s future holds, as he has entered the final year of his contract with the West Midlands.

Naturally, some are discussing whether he should be offered an extension, and FLW fan commentator Matt remarked that, given Albion’s financial situation, he will need to take a wage cut if he wants to stay.

“I believe Mowatt’s future is entirely dependent on the wage he desires.” He will need to take a test if he wants to get a new contract.

“Aside from that, I guess he just has to show what he can do consistently, because it’s not something we’ve seen often enough since he joined the club, especially if you ignore the first couple of months.” He didn’t play much for Middlesbrough previous season, so he needs to produce quality on a consistent basis. That’s what the league’s top players do.”

Should West Brom extend Alex Mowatt’s contract?
Albion’s financial predicament means they won’t be able to offer Mowatt a large sum of money, and while we don’t know his salary, considering his reputation, you’d think he’s a big earner.

Obviously, it must make financial sense, and the reality is that the Baggies may be unable to match whatever offer Mowatt receives elsewhere.

However, as Matt points out, Mowatt must demonstrate his worth over a longer length of time before being offered a contract.

But for the time being, all the player will be concerned with is putting more minutes under his belt and returning to the levels he displayed at Barnsley a few years ago.

What is next for West Brom?
Albion need to get back on track with a win after four games without one, including three consecutive draws, but it won’t be easy this weekend against a Preston team soaring high in the Championship.

However, Corberan will believe he has enough quality in his squad to compete with any Championship side, and it is now up to his players to deliver, with Mowatt expected to play a key role at Deepdale.
