Tottenham Hotspur have announced with profound regret that their under-23 coach, Ugo Ehiogu, died in the early hours of this morning after suffering a heart arrest on Thursday at the club’s training field.

The amazement at how an apparently fit 44-year-old was taken away is palpable, and Tottenham’s head of development, John McDermott, did his best to articulate it.”Words

They sped inside the club’s Enfield training facility, blue lights flashing, and Ehiogu was taken to hospital approximately 20 minutes later. Every member of the staff wore a worried expression on their face.

It was clear from away that Ehiogu was in a fight for his life. Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino, assistant manager Jes Pérez, and McDermott had all went over to the academy fields to assess the issue. Ehiogu was treated in the hospital around the clock, but he could not be saved.

“The club sends its deep condolences to Ugo’s family,” Tottenham said in a statement. Gemma has expressly requested that the family be allowed privacy during this difficult time. We would also like to express our gratitude to all of the medical experts that assisted us, particularly those at North Middlesex University Hospital, Royal Brompton Hospital, and Harefield Hospital.”

In the FA Cup, Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea players will wear black armbands.

Current Villa Park manager Steve Bruce also paid respect to Ehiogu, calling him a “bargain” signing by former Villa Park manager Ron Atkinson in 1991. “I used to play against him. Big Ron paid $45,000 for him – what a steal. He was a fantastic player.”

Stoke manager Mark Hughes has played against Ehiogu and knows what it’s like to face him. “He was a big strong guy, a big athlete, and you knew when you went up against him it was always going to be a difficult game,” Hughes explained. Because you remember them in their prime, when these things happen, they are even more shocking. It’s a great pity.”

Villa, for whom Ehiogu appeared in over 300 games, tweeted:

Ehiogu, who claimed he “used to get psyched-up to a bit of Bon Jovi” before a game, began his coaching career at Tottenham’s youth under Tim Sherwood and Chris Ramsey.

He was a firm believer in the notion of inspiring the next generation, which includes creating a mentoring program for young players to highlight difficulties concerning the current game.

Last night in Dalston, I gave a homeless girl £10.She did not request or plead.I did something rash and impulsive. I’m not going to lie. It felt nice. #dosomethingkind

“If you come to watch games at Tottenham – in particular at development level – you will notice how we try to play, in a certain way with a certain style,” he said in a 2013 article.
