NEWS NOW’: Paul Robinson says £5m Leeds player has really fallen off

Leeds United are not where they want to be right now.

After a sluggish start to the season, the west Yorkshire team lost to Southampton at the weekend, and they’ve lost even more ground in the quest for promotion from the Championship.

Leeds have regressed in recent years, and they now reside in the Championship’s mid-table, a position they have not held since before the days of Marcelo Bielsa.

A number of Leeds players aren’t as good as they once were, and one player who has regressed, according to Paul Robinson on The Debrief, is Illan Meslier.

The analyst was talking about Guglielmo Vicario’s great start at Tottenham, and he used Meslier as an example of why it’s difficult to judge a goalie in a short period of time, arguing that he seemed like an amazing Premier League goalkeeper at one point before falling down.

Meslier was exceptional.
Robinson discussed the £5 million Leeds player.

“Vicario is the future, but it’s difficult to achieve over a long period of time.” Illan Meslier did it in Leeds. He was superb, and many predicted he would be the next Hugo Lloris, but that was difficult to maintain. “The most important thing for a goalkeeper is longevity and sustainability,” Robinson remarked.

It is not the only one.
The unfortunate reality is that Meslier isn’t the only Leeds player who has regressed since his debut season in the Premier League.

Patrick Bamford, Luke Ayling, and Pascal Struijk have never reached such heights again, and it’s difficult to imagine them ever doing so.

Since the Argentine’s departure, no manager has been able to replicate what Marcelo Bielsa produced out of this bunch.
