Gary O’Neil sends a shocking message to VAR

Wolves manager Gary O’Neill admits to being perplexed by VAR and requests that the system be improved after his team was subjected to two contentious rulings against Manchester United and Luton Town.

  • Wolves were denied what looked to be an obvious penalty against Man United
  • Gary O’Neil’s team then conceded a contentious spot-kick in a tie against Luton

Gary O’Neil confesses he has been perplexed by VAR in a season in which Wolves have been wronged by at least two questionable decisions.

Since last Saturday, when Liverpool forward Luis Diaz had a goal incorrectly ruled out for offside in a defeat to Tottenham, Reds manager Jurgen Klopp has called for the game to be replayed.

Wolves should have had a clear penalty at Manchester United on the first day of the season when goalkeeper Andre Onana pole-axed Sasa Kalajdzic while attempting to punch clear, but both the on-field referees and VAR ruled it out.

Then, at Luton last month, the home team was awarded a penalty for what appeared to be an unintentional handball by Joao Gomes.

‘I’m not sure what’s going to happen next,’ O’Neil admitted. ‘It’s comparable to offsides. I’m not sure how accurate some of the lines drawn are, and I’ve spoken to them about it.

‘The system needs to be improved, and I’m sure they’re working hard to do so. There appear to have been mistakes this season, possibly even more so than previous. I’m hoping the men can make the processes better.

‘I hope they can improve it and bring it to a place where everyone understands it and sees what’s coming next because I am a bit lost.

‘I saw the handball last night between Aston Villa and Zrinjski Mostar. The ball struck the player in the face and then struck his hand before being overturned at the screen. Whereas it was delivered on the field and then upheld for us at Luton.’
