Following the team’s embarrassment on Thursday Night Football, Washington Commanders co-owner Earvin Magic Johnson delivered a message to the squad and its head coach. The Commanders were defeated 40-20 at home by a Chicago Bears squad that had lost 14 consecutive games.

Ron Rivera, the Commanders’ head coach, was on the hot seat heading into the season. The temperature is rising after the 2-3 Commanders squandered a game that should have been an easy rebound from a heartbreaking overtime loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 4.

Magic Johnson sends a message to the Commanders in Chief in Washington.

After the game, Johnson went on X to explain the loss. Johnson was dissatisfied with the Commanders’ first-half effort, as the club trailed 27-3 entering the third quarter:

“The Commanders played with no intensity or fire tonight.” We didn’t compete in the first half and were behind 27-3 at the break. It was too huge a hole to get out of, which is why we lost 40-20.”

Johnson’s message was unequivocal. Against the Bears, the team came out flat.

Rivera will have to re-energize his team following the mini-bye. In Week 6, the Commanders face the Atlanta Falcons, and in Week 7, they face the New York Giants. Those are the games that the Commanders should and must win.

Can Rivera bring out the fervor in this group?
