Luton Town has completed the signing of another top class player on a free transfer

Townsend joins Luton Town on a short-term contract.

Andros Townsend, a new Town signing, regarded it as an honor to continue his Premier League journey with the Hatters, adding that he never imagined himself ‘pulling on the Luton shirt’ during his career.

The 32-year-old joined the Tottenham Hotspur youth at the age of eight and stayed for 16 years, playing nearly 100 senior games after turning professional in 2009.

He had a series of loan appearances during that period before joining Newcastle United for £12 million in 2016, only to join Crystal Palace for £13 million six months later.

Townsend spent five years at Selhurst Park, where he won goal of the month three times and goal of the season once, for his magnificent volley against Manchester City in December 2018, which was also nominated for the 2019 FIFA Puskás Award.

After joining Everton in 2021, the attacker was limited to just 27 appearances before sustaining a devastating anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury in March 2022, which has prevented him from appearing in a first-team game since.

Townsend, who has since worked as a pundit for Sky Sports and talkSPORT, had a move to Burnley lined up in the summer, but it fell through due to the offer being retracted while he was training with Luton Town.

After playing 90 minutes for the Hatters’ U21s in their Premier League Cup match against Leeds United last week, the former England international has agreed to a short-term contract with the club until January.

Townsend, who has played 264 times in the Premier League, told Town’s official website: “I feel like it’s a good fit and these last couple of weeks have been good for both parties.”

“I think it had to be right, and I feel like we’ve looked at each other and done that over the last two weeks.”

“I’ve seen where I can help this team, and the manager has seen where I can help – whether on the field, in the locker room, or on the practice field – with my enthusiasm and experience.”

“Plus, Luton Town are my local team – I live 20-25 minutes away, so I’ve been following their progress, and watching the Championship play-off final and seeing them win promotion was fantastic for the club.”

“I never thought I’d pull on the Luton shirt, so it’s a huge honour to play again in the Premier League for this club, and hopefully help this club get as many points as we can and see where it takes us.”
