Patriots open to trading top class player

Mac Jones’ rocky three-year career with the Patriots appears to be coming to an end.

According to NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport, New England is open to dealing Jones and has received calls from teams interested in the quarterback, who have been “doing work” on him.

Patriots open to trading QB Mac Jones; receiving interest

Jones’ career began with stunning success, as the Alabama product led the Patriots to the playoffs with 3,801 yards and 22 touchdowns as a rookie. Though New England was eliminated from the playoffs in a blowout, there was hope about the franchise’s future at quarterback.

Unfortunately, 2021 will be Jones’ greatest year. He regressed severely over the next two seasons, devolving into a quarterback who frequently attempted to heroically raise both himself and the Patriots out of their offensive quagmire, only to make crushing mistakes. Bill Belichick became so fed up with Jones’ mistakes that he benched the former 15th overall pick in favor of Bailey Zappe four times in 2023. By the end of the campaign, it was unclear how the Patriots would progress.

With new coach Jerod Mayo in control and new offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt recently stating that “everything is on the table” behind center, a fresh start appears to be the best option for both parties.

Jones still has his rookie tape to show he can be a respectable quarterback, but he must prove he is not the signal-caller who failed mightily the previous two seasons.

Jones may soon find himself on the QB carousel as it spins annually. Where it ends for him remains to be seen, but based on the tone of Friday’s article, it appears unlikely that it will be in New England.
