Houston Texans has completed the signing of a top class player

Joe Mixon says goodbye to Cincinnati before going for the Houston Texans.

Joe Mixon is ready to pound his way into the Houston Texans’ end zone as their new lead tailback, but first he must say goodbye to Who Dey Nation.

Mixon, whom Houston acquired Tuesday afternoon after a seven-year stint with the Cincinnati Bengals, took to social media to say goodbye to AFC North supporters and the city for treating him like a local.

“Over the last seven years in Cincinnati, I’ve formed countless friendships and ties that will last a lifetime. Mixon wrote, “All I ever wanted to do for Cincinnati was win football games and bring home a championship ring.”

Mixon, who was drafted out of Oklahoma in 2017, established himself as one of the league’s best running backs, continually pushing ahead as the organization rose from AFC basement dweller to conference contender. Mixon, 27, was perhaps the first of the youthful corps, along with Joe Burrow, Tee Higgins, Logan Wilson, Trey Henderickson, and Ja’Marr Chase, to join ‘The Jungle’ on its path to winning the conference title in 2021.

Mixon, a steady chain mover, carried for more than 1,000 yards four times during his stint with Cincinnati. He averaged 4.1 yards per contact and accumulated 62 total touchdowns. His best season was in 2021, when he ran for 1,205 yards and 13 touchdowns to help the Bengals reach the Super Bowl for the first time since 1989.

“Reviving the city and its fans in recent years has been an unforgettable experience. “The real fans’ support has never wavered,” Mixon stated.

Mixon also praised the supporters for believing in him as the leading man despite his inexperience as a Big 12 tailback. Mixon earned All-Conference accolades at Oklahoma after rushing for 1,274 yards in 2016.

“You took a chance on a 20 year kid and made me feel loved since day one,” he said. “It’s difficult to put into words what this area and its people mean to me. Thank you for making it possible for me to pursue my ambition. Cincinnati is a place I’ll always call.

Mixon was anticipated to be released by Cincinnati after the Bengals agreed to a two-year deal with Indianapolis Colt running back Zach Moss on Monday night. After missing out on numerous running backs in free agency, Houston couldn’t afford to let Mixon leave and sign a long-term deal.

The Texans attempted to re-sign lead back Devin Singletary after a good season, but he chose to accept a three-year, $16.5 million contract with the New York Giants. In 2023, the Texans ranked 23rd in the NFL in both rushing yards and rushing touchdowns.

Mixon joins a quality offensive lineup led by Offensive Rookie of the Year C.J. Stroud, representing an upgrade over last season’s choices. He had a promising season in 2023, totaling 1,034 yards and nine touchdowns. He also grabbed 52 passes, totaling 376 receiving yards and three touchdowns.

The 27-year-old is now in the final year of his deal and is owed $5.75 million in 2024, with a roster bonus set for March 18. He’ll share carries with Dameon Pierce, who failed to establish consistency after a strong debut season in 2022.
