Former UK player planning to leave WKU

BOWLING GREEN — A former University of Kentucky basketball player who transferred to Western Kentucky University has entered the transfer portal.

Dontaie Allen, a Falmouth native who has played the last two seasons at WKU, averaged 8.2 points this past season, which included the school winning the Conference USA Tournament championship.

Allen’s best game as a Hilltopper came this season when he had a career-high 30 points to lead WKU to a 105-91 win against Florida International at E.A. Diddle Arena.

Allen led the Tops with 56 3-pointers last season season and shot 40% from that range (56 of 140).

Allen appeared in 33 of WKU’s 34 games, making 13 starts.

A knee injury forced Allen to miss the CUSA Tournament championship win against UTEP, but he returned in time to play against Marquette in the Tops’ NCAA Tournament first-round loss.

Allen averaged 20.8 minutes per outing and had 11 games of double-digit scoring.

Under first-year head coach Steve Lutz, WKU made the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2013.

Lutz has left to be the head coach at Oklahoma State.

His top assistant coach Hank Piona succeeds him at Western.
