Chelsea have been backed to compete for the Premier League title by Manchester United great Roy Keane.

Manchester United “must pull something out of the bag” before the end of the transfer window to have a chance of winning the Premier League this season, claims Roy Keane. United legend Keane has backed Chelsea to challenge for top spot alongside reigning champions Manchester City following the signing of Romelu Lukaku.

Chelsea broke their transfer record on Thursday when they completed the £97.5million acquisition of Lukaku.

The Belgian strengthens a Blues squad which has already won the Champions League under Thomas Tuchel.

Jadon Sancho has arrived from Borussia Dortmund for £73m and Raphael Varane is set to complete his move from Real Madrid imminently.

United haven’t won the Premier League since the retirement of Keane’s former manager Sir Alex Ferguson in 2013.

But the pundit believes it will be a two-horse race between City and Chelsea unless his old side end the transfer window strongly.

“[Chelsea have] got energy, new manager, new ideas, and they’ve always had quality,” Keane told The Overlap.

“You were looking at the last year or two going without that out and out goalscorer. But Lukaku gives them a great chance.

“I know Liverpool have a lot of players coming back, but I would still be looking at City and Chelsea.

“Unless United or Liverpool pull something out of the bag in the next week or two with a few brilliant signings, I can’t see beyond City or Chelsea.”

Lukaku arrives at Chelsea off the back of two stellar seasons at Inter Milan.

Keane says the striker’s previous spell at United came at the wrong time but says he will guarantee goals for Tuchel.

e added: “The timing for a player is huge, the club and Man United were maybe at the wrong time. Because there was no doubt he was a brilliant player.

“His stats will tell you that, even going back to his time at Everton.

“Sometimes, a brilliant player will come to your club and it’s just not the right fit. The chemistry’s not right, maybe it’s the coach or manager. He might have a few injuries.

“Lukaku went off to Inter Milan, don’t tell me you were surprised that he scored so many goals? Obviously he worked on his diet but he matured himself, going to another country.

“So when you think of him coming back, he’s guaranteed goals. Chelsea, the way they’re playing, the sharpness, the quality they will have on the ball, it guarantees you 20 goals.”
