Liverpool handed Kylian Mbappe boost with Marcelo eyed

Transfer deadline day is upon Premier League clubs, but Liverpool have still only made one signing this summer, despite Jurgen Klopp’s squad being in danger of becoming stretched

Liverpool’s transfer window has barely got off the ground this summer, with Ibrahima Konate being the sole arrival at Anfield.

Having seen Georgino Wijnaldum depart, with Xherdan Shaqiri set to follow, Jurgen Klopp’s squad is already beginning to look stretched.

The Premier League side have just a few hours remaining to complete their business until the winter window opens in January.

Klopp will ideally hope he can add a new central midfielder to free up Harvey Elliott to provide support further forward.

Here, Mirror Football rounds up the latest Liverpool transfer news with deadline day upon us.

Paris Saint-Germain have reportedly handed a boost to Liverpool’s hopes of signing star attacker Kylian Mbappe.

The Frenchman has just one year remaining on his contract at the Parc Des Princes and appears unlikely to sign a new deal.

Liverpool and Real Madrid are considered to be two of the main frontrunners to make a move for the 22-year-old.

Los Blancos last week submitted two offers for Mbappe, with the highest being in the region of £145.75million.

But according to RMC Sport, Madrid have now informed PSG that they are pulling out of negotiations to sign him this summer.

That means that Mbappe looks set to stay with PSG until his contract expires, which will allow the Reds to negotiate on more of a level playing field in competition with Madrid.

Liverpool’s hopes of signing Reading starlet Femi Azeez are said to have been “dashed”, with the midfielder set for a spell on the treatment table.

Azeez broke into the Royals’ senior side this season, scoring two goals in their first four games in the Championship.

Though he only signed a new contract in the summer, his performances drew the interest of Liverpool.

According to Caught Offside, Reds boss Jurgen Klopp wanted to bring him to Anfield before tonight’s deadline.

But those hopes have ended with BerkshireLive reporting that Azeez has been ruled out until later this year with a soft tissue injury after missing Reading’s 4-0 defeat at Huddersfield this weekend.

“Femi has a soft tissue injury and he will be out for two to three months,” the report quotes Royals manager Veljko Paunovic as saying.

Jurgen Klopp is reportedly sizing up a cut-price move for Serie A-winning midfielder Marcelo Brozovic.

Having allowed Georginio Wijnaldum to depart at the end of last season, the Reds are light in the midfield depart.

Reports in Italy now claim that Reds boss Klopp could look to Brozovic to fill that gap, though he will have to wait another year to bring him to Anfield.

Brozovic is notable as a ball-winning midfielder and helped Inter Milan to win the Serie A title last term.

But he has entered the final year of his contract at the San Siro, with Inter Live reporting that Liverpool hope to sign him on a free transfer next summer.

It is stated that the Reds are ready to offer the Croatian wages of £6million a year, though Inter remain keen on keeping him in Italy.
