Manchester City’s failed pursuit of Harry Kane led to them eyeing Erling Haaland

Manchester City’s failed pursuit of Harry Kane led to them eyeing Erling Haaland, says the Mirror, but Borussia Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc is adamant the 21-year-old won’t be sold this summer.

Haaland is one of the hottest properties in Europe after scoring 29 goals in 27 games for Red Bull Salzburg (2019 – 2020) before joining Dortmund (2020 – present) and bagging 63 goals with 18 assists in 64 games.

The Norwegian international, who boasts seven goals in 12 caps, has scored six goals in five games this season already, so it’s clear he has a bright future. Haaland is expected to eventually leave Dortmund amid interest from Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester City among others, but Zorc won’t be pressured.

He told Kicker (h/t Goal): “We are a football club, not a bank! Our position is very clear and did not change. I assume that we will now be confronted with wild rumours for another two days. Our position is clear, I don’t need to play the parrot all the time.”

Dortmund want to keep Haaland for the season and then weigh up all the interest when they have time to locate a replacement. It’s always been their plan to hold onto the striker until 2022 when his release clause can be triggered.

Man City will be disappointed for now, but it was hard to see them signing Haaland in the final days of the summer transfer window anyway.
