The Department of Culture, Media, and Sport have issued a statement regarding the status of the Premier League fixtures for next weekend.
Following the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, all English Premier League games were postponed this weekend, including Manchester City’s match against Tottenham Hotspur.
A statement from the English top flight confirmed the postponement of Premier League fixtures this weekend:
“At a meeting this morning, Premier League clubs paid tribute to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
“To honor her extraordinary life and contribution to the nation, and as a mark of respect, this weekend’s Premier League match round will be postponed, including Monday evening’s game.”
Richard Masters, Premier League Chief Executive, said as part of the official statement: “We and our clubs would like to pay tribute to Her Majesty’s long and unwavering service to our country.
“As our longest-serving monarch, she has been an inspiration and leaves behind an incredible legacy following a life of dedication.
“This is a tremendously sad time for not just the nation but also for the millions of people around the world who admired her, and we join together with all those in mourning her passing.”
“Further updates regarding Premier League fixtures during the period of mourning will be provided in due course.”
Now, in a new update concerning the status of next weekend’s fixtures, The Department of Culture, Media and Sport have issued a new comment.
At present, Manchester City is due to return to Premier League action with an away trip to face Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday lunchtime.
Speaking to Football London on Saturday, a spokesperson for the DCMS assured that their guidance given before the Premier League’s decision to postpone games would not change from the guidance provided ahead of the ongoing weekend.
“Our guidance will stay the same,” the spokesperson opened.
“There’s no obligation to cancel as far as the government is concerned.
“But it’s ultimately up to the Premier League and EFL to make those decisions.”
Manchester City will however be returning to action before next weekend.
As confirmed on Friday evening, the Premier League champions clash against Borussia Dortmund in the European competition will take place as scheduled.
The Bundesliga giants travel to the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday night for matchday two of the UEFA Champions League.
