Report: Leicester take step towards fighting Newcastle United for Champions League playmaker

Matt O’Riley is wanted by Leicester City, so the English club dispatched scout Sean St Ledger to observe him play for Celtic against RB Leipzig in the Champions League.

This season has been extremely difficult for the Foxes.

In the first 10 Premier League games of this season, Brendan Rodgers has only recorded one victory, drawn twice, and lost seven times.

Leicester appear to be in serious difficulty following a disastrous summer transfer window, and Rodgers is vying for this position.

Rodgers will surely want some backing in the January transfer window and he seemingly fancies raiding Celtic to bolster his squad.

LEICESTER CITY WANT MATT O’RILEY

The Scottish Daily Mail (back page, 18/10) report that Leicester are ramping up their interest in Celtic playmaker O’Riley.

It’s stated that Leicester sent scout Sean St Ledger to Celtic Park last week in order to watch O’Riley in action against RB Leipzig.

Leicester are seemingly watching O’Riley very closely ahead of trying to tempt Celtic into a January deal.

This is a similar approach Newcastle United are taking.

The Sun claim that Newcastle were scouting O’Riley in action against Leipzig too as they look to win the race.

O’Riley has told Tipsbladet in Denmark that both Leicester and Newcastle want him, so these updates in recent days certainly back that up.

Newcastle may well have more money to spend than Leicester come January though, and that has to be a concern for the Foxes.

O’Riley was a target for Rodgers at Celtic in January 2019 but no deal was done and the Northern Irishman will now hope to finally work with the playmaker.

O’Riley, who joined Celtic in January after leaving MK Dons, has contributed four goals and seven assists in 34 appearances.

O’Riley, a playmaker with exceptional technical ability who has had a significant impact in the last third but is now displaying his talent in a deeper role, is destined for the Premier League in the future.

Celtic can only hope that day is still far off.
