Report: Tottenham eyeing swoop for £50m man Graham Potter called ‘fantastic’

According to TEAMtalk, £50 million-rated Brighton and Hove Albion goalkeeper Robert Sanchez is a candidate to replace Hugo Lloris at Premier League giants Tottenham Hotspur.

The 35-year-old Frenchman is no longer a youngster, but where would the Spurs be without him? The Europa League, most likely.

Lloris turned back the clock in last week’s dramatic comeback win over Marseille. Alexis Sanchez, Mateo Guendouzi, and co. would be preparing for a round-of-16 clash with AC Milan in the New Year if it weren’t for his cat-like reflexes.

Nonetheless, finding a long-term replacement for Spurs’ veteran number one is still a challenge that Tottenham must face head-on. The World Cup winner is now just a couple of weeks away from his 36th birthday.

Tottenham, the report adds, ‘really like Sanchez’, though any approach will wait until the end of the current campaign.

It’s been quite the rise for the 6ft 6ins Spaniard. He was playing in England’s fourth tier with Forest Green Rovers as recently as 2019, after al. The one-time Rochdale loanee is one of the first names on Brighton’s team sheet these days; his superb shot-stopping ability and impressive distribution make Sanchez a key figure under Graham Potter and Roberto de Zerbi.

Sanchez, who was linked with Newcastle United before Nick Pope arrived from Burnley, is valued in the region of £50 million by the Seagulls (Telegraph).

“He’s a fantastic young goalkeeper,” now-Chelsea boss Potter said back in 2021. “Since Rob came into the team, we have seen his quality and what he brings.”

Sanchez’s ball-playing style could help the Spurs transition to a more modern approach under Conte, too. Lloris’ distribution is proving to be more of a mixed bag.

Tottenham is also reportedly keen on Valencia’s Georgia international Giorgi Mamardashvili.
