‘Be back soon’ – Leicester City legend drops huge return hint as vacancy opens

Leicester City news from LeicestershireLive, as Andy King discusses a possible return to the club in the near future.

When asked about the possibility of returning to Leicester City, Andy King stated that he “will be back soon.”

The 34-year-old left City in 2020 after 16 years with the club, during which he won the League One, Championship, and Premier League titles. King was unable to have a testimonial at the club due to the coronavirus pandemic, but he has promised to return.

Speaking to fellow City academy graduate Matt Piper on the Made In Leicester podcast series, King said he has not had a “final goodbye” at the club and hinted at a return as coach or manager. The midfielder is currently still playing and has a player-coach role under Nigel Pearson at Bristol City, but he may not have long left on the pitch.

“I left during covid, so there were obviously bigger things going on in the world,” King told Piper. “It was impossible to get any sort of gathering together, let alone any sort of crowd. We were all on lockdown.

“To be honest that was probably the main reason, which is fair enough. There are some things in life that are bigger than football.

“I don’t see it as a final goodbye anyway. I’ll be back soon and I’m sure we can do something then.”

When asked if that will be coaching or managing, King said: “Hopefully a bit of both. That’s what I want to do when I finish playing. I want to coach and I’d love to come back to the club at some point. We’ll have to see.

“I don’t think it was a thing of they didn’t want to do it, or I didn’t want to do it. It’s something me and the club have spoken about, but at that time of life for those couple of years there (during the pandemic), it was bad timing.”

Even though King has not finished up his playing career as yet, there is a new vacancy in Brendan Rodgers’ backroom team after the surprise exit of Kolo Toure to Wigan. Rodgers has spoken previously of the importance of having a young coach on board who can act as a bridge between the manager and players.

‘Kingy’ is working through his coaching badges and has ambitions of coaching and managing for the rest of his career, he revealed to Piper. It would be fitting for King to do that at the club he spent so many years serving so well.
