Tottenham delivered blow in the race for signing Croatia international

Tottenham Hotspur target and Croatia defender Josko Gvardiol hints about his future

Tottenham Hotspur fans will be disappointed to learn that RB Leipzig and Croatia international center-back Josko Gvardiol has hinted that he would like to play for Chelsea someday.

Spurs and Chelsea have both been linked with a move for the 20-year-old hot prospect. His performances have piqued the interest of some of Europe’s top clubs, who would like to add the young defender to their roster.

However, while speaking to The Athletic (subscription required) [h/t Fabrizio Romano], the defender hinted that he would like to play for the Blues someday.

“Chelsea is a big club, maybe one day I will be there. My agent is taking care of my future, I’m happy in Leipzig now. It’s nice to see the links, especially because there is Kovacic. So… you never know!”

Gvardiol has been sensational for both club and country this year. A regular for both at just 20, the center-back has started all three games for Croatia in this year’s World Cup, keeping two clean sheets in the process.

The 20-year-old not only is an excellent center-back, but he can also play in the left-back position. This is something that will allow the Croatian to play Ben Davies’ role in Antonio Conte’s preferred system of three at the back.

Conte has been keen to add reinforcements to his backline and there are very few players who are currently as good as the 20-year-old. But he will not come cheap as it is believed the German club wants around £70 million for their star youngster.

Also, the player hinting to play for our rivals does not make the task any easier. It will be wise for Spurs to up their game and try to convince the defender to make a move to north London over west London.

His performance in the World Cup is likely to increase the asking price – the basic principle of supply and demand if more suitors come to the table. But the player is just 20 and has a long future ahead of him.

And hence, the Lilywhites shouldn’t think twice about going big for Gvardiol. We put the money on the table when we believed Richarlison was a good fit for our team this summer. The Croatia defender warrants similar treatment.
