Maximo Perrone is reportedly poised to join Pep Guardiola’s team in 2023, and Manchester City appears to have already made their first signing of the offseason.
According to Fabrizio Romano, Manchester City are close to agreeing on a deal for the 19-year-old Argentine, who has caught the eye with his performances for Velez Sarsfield in 2022.
Romano wrote on Twitter:
“Manchester City is set to trigger the release clause for Vélez talent Máximo Perrone, worth $8m — here we go expected soon if all goes to plan. The Argentinian midfielder born in 2003 is considered a huge talent. He’d join City after the Sudamericano Sub20.”
The city has already reaped the rewards of signing young Argentinian talents with Julian Alvarez impressing since his switch from River Plate earlier this year, and Txiki Begiristain could be set to complete another masterclass with the addition of Perrone.
The teenager predominantly plays as a defensive midfielder and has 33 senior appearances to his name, in which he has contributed three goals and two assists.
A ‘spectacular’ signing for Pep?
There is no doubt that City boasts some of the best young talents in world football and with their academy constantly churning out more and more wonderkids from their production line, the Citizens look well set for the future.
The likes of Phil Foden, Rico Lewis, and Cole Palmer all look set for big futures with the club has progressed from the academy, while youngsters such as Sergio Gomez, Alvarez, and Erling Haaland have all been recruited as young, first-team-ready players.
Perrone’s experience in Argentina suggests that he could be challenging for a first-team spot should he arrive at the Etihad next year and while he would be competing with the likes of Rodri, Kevin De Bruyne, and Ilkay Gundogan for a starting spot, there seems little reason why he couldn’t step up as their replacements in the future.
The young midfielder is clearly very highly thought of in Argentina, with his former manager and ex-United defender Gabriel Heinze singing his praises when he was just 17, describing him as a “spectacular” talent.
He has certainly lived up to that reputation by establishing himself as a key player with Velez and if he can continue his development under a world-class manager such as Guardiola, there seems little to suggest that he won’t be another hugely successful signing at the Etihad.
