Newcastle United is on the verge of signing a 30-year-old contract rebel, with an offer on the table.

Newcastle United is closing in on Stefan de Vrij with the Inter Milan defender allegedly heading for St James’ Park in the near future.

That’s according to DAZN reporter Orazio Accomando, who claims that De Vrij has received an ‘important offer’ from Newcastle.

DAZN is one of the key broadcasters in Italy, showing regular Serie A games with Accomando providing transfer news.

It’s stated that De Vrij is heading toward the Inter exit at the end of the season with his contract set to expire.

Accomando claims that Newcastle is close to an agreement with De Vrij and that Tottenham made an inquiry in recent days.

De Vrij has allegedly rejected a move to AC Milan though, snubbing the Rossoneri out of respect for city rivals Inter.

DAZN seems confident that De Vrij is heading for Tyneside but it’s a rumor worth questioning.

There have been links to De Vrij for a long, long time now – even going back to November 2021, shortly after Newcastle’s takeover.

The Times noted that Newcastle had identified De Vrij as a key target but no deal was done.

De Vrij is now into the last six months of his contract and Newcastle may well position themselves for a bargain.

Forming a Dutch centre-back partnership of De Vrij and Sven Botman may well appeal, especially as a right-footed and left-footed combination.

De Vrij turns 31 in February though and that does just make us question a Newcastle move.

The Magpies have been careful when it comes to signing experienced players, only signing those with Premier League experiences like Nick Pope, Kieran Trippier, Dan Burn, and Chris Wood.

De Vrij doesn’t fit that mold and would surely command huge wages if he is moving on as a free agent.

The 6ft 3in defender may well be on Newcastle’s radar but a big deal as a free agent would be a surprise and something we think Dan Ashworth would be pretty cautious over.
