Tottenham signing turned down club’s late attempt to hijack transfer – ‘wanted to keep his word,’ ‘had already committed…’

According to Portuguese media, Manchester City considered hijacking the transfer of Pedro Porro to Tottenham Hotspur.

That’s today reported by the newspaper Record, which features a few stories with some interesting information about what happened in the final days of the transfer window and hadn’t been told yet.

It’s claimed that after Manchester City agreed to João Cancels’s transfer to Bayern Munich, they made a ‘last-hour approach’ to sign Porro from Sporting.

According to the report, the Spaniard was already “committed” to Tottenham at the time and “didn’t even hesitate” when presented with the new offer.

He ‘wanted to keep his word’ and turned down the opportunity to rejoin Pep Guardiola’s squad.

Pedro Porro was a Manchester City player between 2019 and 2022, and their agreement with Sporting included a €23 million buy-back option.

That’s why he was the obvious choice if the club needed to sign a fullback on the final day of the transfer window.

Allowing him to return to Manchester City would be the ‘worst scenario’ for Sporting, who ended up making far more money when agreeing to sell the player to Tottenham for €47.5 million.
